Recent achievements in external radiation dosimetry

چکیده
Some of the more relevant recent achievements and developments in the field of external radiation dosimetry are reviewed in this presentation. Among them, topics related to personal dosimetry, as the relative role of active and passive methods and the features of some recently proposed new methods. Electronic personal dosemeters and Optically Stimulated Luminescence, OSL, have already accredited their adequacy for practical work, their features and performance are compared with more conventional methods as TLD. The special situation of personal dosimetry for the protection of the staff in complex interventional radiology procedures, is also commented. Underestimations as well as overestimations of the effective dose are to be avoided without a clear solution for the moment respect to the number and position of the personal dosimeters. Some recent recently results published related to single and double dosimetry are discussed. The situation of neutron dosimetry, both area and personal, is reviewed following the recently published results obtained by a European research consortium (Evidos). While the situation of area dosimetry is more or less comfortable, personal methods still present drawbacks and limitations particularly with respect to the energy dependence of response. The impact of computational methods for practically every area of dosimetry is another topic included in this Key Note that finishes with some reference to the new 2007 ICRP recommendations regarding the dosimetry system.

متن کاملQuality Assurance in Radiation Dosimetry: Achievements and Trends - NTR2009 Supplement
Dosimetry is the science of measuring radiation dosage. The absorbed dose of radiation is measured in a unit called “gray” (Gy). Radiation dosage measurements and ensuring they are as accurate as possible are important if the benefits of the application of nuclear technology in health care are to be harnessed. Radioactive processes and radiation are utilized in many health related technologies,...
متن کاملEvaluation of Ferrous-Agarose-Xylenol Gel Properties in Radiation Dosimetry
Background: Over recent decades, modern protocols of external beam radioÂtherapy and radiation techniques such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) have been developed. These methods are extremely sensitive to errors in treatment delivery, so that it is essential to apply a high resolution 3D dosimetry system that has high sensitivity and is capable of measuring and verifying the complex...
متن کاملStandard calibration of ionization chambers used in radiation therapy dosimetry and evaluation of uncertainties
Background: Absolute dosimetry of external beam radiotherapy is carried out by the use of ionization chambers. These chambers must be calibrated at a standard dosimetry laboratory before any use in clinical dosimetry. The secondary standard dosimetry laboratory of Iran (SSDL) has the duty of calibrating the ionization chambers used in radiotherapy centers in Iran. Materials and Methods...

Application of radioactive isotopes is the treatment of choice around the globe for many cancer sites. In this technique, the accuracy of the radiation delivery is highly dependent on the accuracy of radiation dosimetry around individual brachytherapy sources. Moreover, in order to have compatible clinical results, an identical method of source dosimetry must be employed across the world. This ...
